Surgical Treatments

Surgical procedures may be performed as a treatment for infertility. Our physicians have years of experience in reproductive surgical techniques to treat pelvic adhesions, endometriosis, fallopian tube obstructions, fibroids, polyps and uterine anomalies. These surgical procedures can often correct problems that may cause infertility, resulting in improved chances for conception.

Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a minor surgical procedure in which a thin telescope is inserted into the uterus in order to visualize the inside of the uterine cavity. During the procedure, structural abnormalities inside of the uterus such as fibroids, polyps, a uterine septum, or scar tissue can be repaired.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a surgical technique that enables a physician to view the pelvic organs through a small fiberoptic tube fitted with a camera. This instrument, called a laproscope, is inserted into the abdominal cavity through tiny incisions in the belly button and/or lower abdomen. Small instruments can also be inserted through these incisions in order to remove ovarian cysts, pelvic adhesions, fibroids, endometriosis, or fallopian tube damage.

Myomectomy

Myomectomy is the surgical removal of fibroids (benign growths) from the uterus. Fibroids are very common in reproductive-aged women, and often do not require treatment when they are asymptomatic. However, sometimes they cause symptoms such as infertility or heavy vaginal bleeding, which may require surgical removal. Depending on the size and location of fibroids in the uterus, they may be removed by hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, or a larger abdominal incision called a laparotomy.
