Scope of Services » Infertility Treatment for Women

After a woman's diagnostic and evaluation studies are completed, the physician will work closely with the patient to recommend and initiate a clinical treatment plan, personalized for her specific needs.

The following services are available and may be considered treatment options:

Ovulation Induction and Superovulation

For women who do not ovulate on their own, medications are prescribed to induce ovulation so that conception can occur with either timed intercourse or intrauterine insemination, known as IUI or artificial insemination.

To help increase opportunities for conception for patients who do ovulate on their own, the use of oral or injectable medications may be recommended to stimulate the ovaries to produce and release multiple mature eggs rather than the customary one monthly egg. This is a common treatment for women with unexplained infertility.

Intrauterine (Artificial) Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination is commonly known as either Artificial Insemination or "IUI". A quick and simple office procedure involving no anesthesia, an IUI involves the placement of a catheter with "washed" or specially prepared sperm directly into a woman's uterus.

By bypassing a woman's cervix, this procedure is often recommended for couples who have infertility due to either a male factor such as a low sperm count or decreased motility or cervical mucus issues, which can make it difficult for sperm to reach the fallopian tubes where fertilization occurs.

It is often performed as part of the treatment for unexplained infertility along with superovulation medications. There is an increased chance for fertilization when the placement of sperm containing only viable sperm is placed directly within the uterus.

Our CLIA and NY/CT state licensed Andrology laboratory, specializes in the preparation and "washing" of semen for inseminations to ensure that the semen used for the procedure is filtered leaving only a high concentration of good quality sperm for use in this procedure.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)

ART methods have evolved since 1978 when the world witnessed its first "test tube baby" through in vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF is the process by which eggs are removed from a woman and fertilized with her partner's or donor sperm in a highly specialized embryology laboratory. If fertilization occurs and embryos develop, good quality, viable embryo(s) are transferred back within the woman's uterus for implantation and pregnancy several days after her egg retrieval. IVF and ART laboratory procedures opened the doors for large numbers of women who previously could not conceive. Recent developments in ART have resulted in tens of thousands of babies being born to women who previously could not conceive.

Pregnancy success rates vary greatly between IVF programs. The Greenwich Fertility Center is proud of its affiliation with the NYU Fertility Center, one of the largest, established, and most successful fertility centers in the country. Our physicians, nurses, and embryologists are world renowned for their expertise, research, and dedication to the field.

Surgical Services

Surgical procedures may be performed as a treatment for infertility. This may reduce or eliminate the need for assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Our physicians have years of experience in reproductive surgical techniques to treat fallopian tube obstructions, pelvic adhesions, endometriosis, fibroids, and uterine anomalies. Hysteroscopy, laparoscopy and other minimally invasive forms of surgery are performed at Greenwich Hospital or at Greenwich Hospital's Helmsely Ambulatory Surgical Center located directly above our offices. These surgical procedures can often correct problems that may cause infertility resulting in improved chances for conception.

Donor Oocyte (Egg) Services

Oocyte donation, commonly referred to as egg donation, is sometimes the best option for women who are having trouble conceiving due to age, disease, genetic abnormalities, prior surgeries or inadequate response to fertility medications.

In these circumstances, it is still possible for these women to conceive a child and carry it to term with help from donated eggs which are carefully screened and matched to each patient Read more.

Fertility Preservation - Egg Freezing (Oocyte Cryopreservation)

Fertility preservation through oocyte (egg) freezing allows women to store eggs at a younger age for use when they are older. It is now an important part of modern day culture. Whether eggs are being cryopreserved because of a medical emergency such as a newly-diagnosed cancer or for personal reasons, the technology holds great promise for women of reproductive age. Integrative and Support Services

Achieving a pregnancy may have significant emotional impact on an individual or couple. Clinical psychologists, part of our referral network, are available to offer emotional support at difficult times. All counseling sessions are confidential.

In addition, Greenwich Hospital's Center for Integrative Medicine provides a series of stress reducing mind-body priming for pregnancy services. These include therapeutic massage, yoga, acupuncture, nutritional counseling, and relaxation classes designed to enhance fertility.
